Central Maryland Heritage League

Founded in 1989, the Central Maryland Heritage League is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization created to promote the cultural, historical, and natural heritage of the Middletown Valley.

The mission of the Central Maryland Heritage League is to advocate, encourage, and enhance public awareness of this heritage through the conservation, interpretation, preservation and stewardship of the resources contributing to the South Mountain State Battlefield and its surrounds -- including but not limited to Wise's Field, historic Dahlgren Chapel, and the Dahlgren family involvement in the events relating to the Civil War in Maryland.

The Central Maryland Heritage League has grown from a battlefield protection group. While the South Mountain State Battlefield is one of our prime initiatives, the organization has acquired Dahlgren Chapel, the private family chapel of Madeleine Vinton Dahlgren, built in 1881 and located atop South Mountain. We hold easements on several properties for preservation purposes. These efforts, coupled with our focus on the education of our cultural and natural heritage in the Middletown Valley and throughout Central Maryland, are the ongoing initiatives of our organization.
